New Ideas to Reform our Criminal Justice System
Sun, Oct 25, 2009 - 08:45 PMPosted by Laure Quinlivan in Crime
Tom & Cathy Crain hosted a salon Sunday night on new ideas to reform the criminal justice system. Ohio Sen. Bill Seitz spoke first about the bill he's introduced to help Ohio save money by diverting certain offenders to treatment programs to help rehabilitate them and reduce recidivism. Next, David Singleton filled us in on the effort to change government policy on hiring ex-offenders, if they can make a good case they are capable and ready to be productive citizens. He made so much sense. The last speaker was Neil Tilow of Talbert House. Talbert House is the place with programs for drunk drivers, substance abusers, you name it. It's important to pass Issue 4 to continue funding these important programs. We're about to get a mental health court in Cincinnati, great and welcome news. Did you realize that 70% of the people who commit crimes are either mentally ill or substance abusers? Putting them in prisons has strained our system to the breaking point and is bankrupting taxpayers. We need change. Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper moderated. He's the best. With courageous political leadership we can help the public understand why change is necessary and get the citizen support we need to do the right thing...for all of us. Please elect me so I can help!
